India Independence Day - India's Independence Day is celebrated every year on 15th August with great joy and gaiety across the country.  A new era had begun on this day after being freed from the clutches of British colonialism for more than 200 years.  On 15 August 1947, India got complete independence from the British rule.  This day (India Independence Day) is not less than any festival and this day is celebrated with love.  This freedom struggle lasted for a long time, in which many freedom fighters sacrificed their lives.
To honor the country's independence from the British Empire, this day has been declared as a national and gazetted holiday throughout India.  On this day all national, state and local government offices, banks, post offices, markets, shops, businesses, institutions etc. remain closed.  It is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the capital of India, Delhi, while in schools, colleges and other educational institutions including public community and society, it is celebrated with enthusiasm and colorful programs are presented in which children, elders all participate.

During the 17th century, some European traders entered the border post of the Indian subcontinent.  Then India was ruled by the Mughal Empire.  The rebellion of 1857 was an effective revolt, after which many organizations emerged from all over India.  One of them was the Indian National Congress Party which was formed in the year 1885.  The period of discontent and sadness across the nation gave rise to non-violent movements (non-cooperation and civil disobedience movements) led by Gandhi.

 At the 1929 session of the Indian National Congress in Lahore, India declared Poorna Swaraj.  In order to fulfill the demand of Purna Swaraj, the Indian citizens were requested by the National Congress to properly follow the orders of the Civil Disobedience Movement and any movement in the coming times.

 After the Second World War in 1947, the British government was convinced that it could not show its power in India for a long time.  Indian freedom fighters were fighting continuously and then the British decided to free India, however after India's independence (15 August 1947) there were Hindu-Muslim riots which separated India and Pakistan.

 Mohammad Ali Jinnah became the first Governor General of Pakistan while Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of independent India.  An official ceremony was held in the capital of the country, Delhi, where all the big leaders and freedom fighters (Abul Kalam Azad, BR Ambedkar, Master Tara Singh, etc.) celebrated the festival of independence by participating in it.
 A large number of people died on both sides during the violence of Partition while people from other regions celebrated Independence Day.  The 5th meeting of the Constituent Assembly was held on 14th August at 11 PM under the leadership of President Rajendra Prasad in the Constitutional Hall, New Delhi where Jawaharlal Nehru gave his speech.

 On the midnight of 15 August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru declared India an independent country where he delivered the "Try over Destiny" speech.  He said during his speech that “Many years ago we had made a vow to Bhagyavadhu and now the time has come, when we fulfill our promise, not wholly or in full quantity but very strongly.  At the touch of the midnight hour when the world sleeps, India will wake up to life and freedom.

 A moment will come, which will come, but only once in history, when we move from the old to the new, when the age is over and the soul of the nation which was long suppressed finds expression.  Today we ended our misfortune and India has rediscovered itself”.

 Thereafter, the members of the assembly took an oath to render their services to the country with utmost sincerity.  The national flag was officially presented to the assembly by a group of Indian women.  Thus India became an officially independent country and Nehru and Viceroy Lord Mountbatten became Prime Minister and Governor General respectively.  Mahatma Gandhi was not involved in the celebration, he stayed in Calcutta and observed a 24-hour fast to promote peace between Hindus and Muslims.

 5. On August 15, 1947, Lord Mountbatten worked in his office.  In the afternoon, Nehru handed over the list of his cabinet to him and later addressed a gathering at Princes Garden near India Gate.
 6. On every Independence Day, the Indian Prime Minister hoists the flag from the Red Fort.  But this did not happen on August 15, 1947.  According to a research paper of the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Nehru had hoisted the flag from the Red Fort on August 16, 1947.
 7. According to Campbell Johnson, the press secretary of Lord Mountbatten, the then Viceroy of India, the second anniversary of Japan's surrender to the Allied forces was falling on August 15, the day it was decided to liberate India.
