It is customary to buy new jewelery on the occasion of this festival associated with Diwali.  Traders also worship their vault on this day.  Dhantrayodashi means the birthday of the god Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods.  Let us, through this article, understand the importance of this day and the scripture of the works to be done on this day.
This festival is celebrated on Kartik Krishna Paksha Trayodashi.  This year, Dhantrayodashi is on November 2, 2021.  Wealth is worshiped on this day, so that our life can run smoothly.  Here 'Dhan' means pure Lakshmi.  Vasu, water, air, fire and sun are called wealth in the Sri Sukta.  The real Lakshmi is the money earned through the right path.  Otherwise Alakshmi becomes the cause of calamity.

The practical and spiritual features of this festival are as follows.

     practical

This day is considered especially important for traders;  Because Shri Lakshmi Devi is worshiped to get wealth.

     Spiritual

On this day the element of Sri Lakshmi Devi is emitted in large quantity in the universe.  Therefore, the living entity receives the blessings of Sri Lakshmi Devi and Narayan.  But this grace depends on the spirit of the soul.  In the present times, the seekers need energy, and it is more important to save life and keep it safe than practical happiness.  Therefore, this day is considered as 'Mahaparva' for the living beings who do spiritual practice.

     importance

This day is colloquially called 'Dhanteras'.  Traders worship the safe on this day.  The business year is from Diwali to Diwali.  On this day the bookkeeping of the new year is bought and worshiped, after which it is put to use.
On this day, by the act of buying new vessels of gold or silver, the wealth form of Shri Lakshmi is invoked and the working Lakshmi element is given momentum.  Due to this, wealth and Lakshmi reside in the house throughout the year.  At the time of actual Lakshmi Puja, the transactions for the whole year have to be accounted for.  At that time, if the money left till Dhantrayodashi is spent for good work, then Dhanalakshmi stays till the end.  Wealth means money, this money should be earned throughout the year by sweating, hard work, through a worthy path.  The scriptures say that at least 1/6th of this money should be spent in religious work.' - Param Pujya Parasram Madhav Pandey Maharaj, Sanatan Ashram, Devad, Panvel.
In the past, the king used to empty his treasury at the end of the year by donating it to Satpatra.  And they felt blessed.  As a result, the relationship between the people and the king was familial.  The king's treasury belonged to the subjects and the king was the only caretaker.  Hence, people used to pay taxes without any hindrance.  So naturally the treasury was replenished.  By using money for good works, self-confidence also increased.

     Dhanwantri Jayanti

The Dhanvantari gods were born from the churning of the ocean by the gods and demons.  Lord Dhanvantari with four arms holds 'Amrit Kalash' in one hand, 'leech' in second hand, 'conch' in third hand and 'Chakra' in fourth hand.  Lord Dhanvantari does the work of curing all diseases by using these things.' - Modern Vaidya Shriram Lade.

     worship method

Vaidyas worship Dhanvantari Devta (Vaidya of the Gods) on this day.  Finely chopped neem leaves and sugar are given to people as 'prasad'.  Neem is derived from nectar.  Dhanvantari is the giver of nectar.  If five to six neem leaves are eaten daily, there is no possibility of a person getting sick.  Due to these qualities in Neem, it is distributed as Dhanvantari Prasad on this day.

     yamadeepdan

Yama is the god of death and dharma.  We need to be constantly aware that every human being's death is certain.  Death cannot be avoided;  But so that no one should die prematurely, on the day of Dhantrayodashi, make thirteen lamps of flour for Yama Dharma and keep them outside the house facing south in the evening.  At other times the lamp should never be facing south, only on this day these thirteen lamps should be lit by facing south.  Then pray by reciting the following mantra.

     Mrityana pasdandabhyam kalen shyamayasah.
     Trayodashyadipadanat Suryajah Priyatam Mama.

It means: On Trayodashi I offer this lamp to the son of Surya i.e. Yama Devta.  He frees me from the shackles of death and blesses me.

On Dhantrayodashi, Shri Lakshmi Tattva is active on the earth in more quantity.  At present, people worship Shri Lakshmi in the form of money and ornaments on this day.  Because of this, they do not get the blessings of Shri Lakshmi in the true sense.  The soul, who worships only material wealth, gets caught in the web of Maya and forgets the original purpose of human birth.  Whereas the basic aim of human life is to attain salvation through spiritual practice.  On this day, by meditating on Shri Lakshmi Devi, worship should be done according to the scriptures.
